Reason Roundup’s “frustration” with Vance’s (alleged) conflation of ‘refugee and immigrant’, is Perfect Analysis in the Rear-View Mirror. Having the luxury of time sans TV cameras, retrospective analysis, and comparative privacy, RR overlooks a basic operating principle for politicians and other stand-up comics: Read The Room. Faced with network time constrictions and a drooling liberal pseudo-journalist starving for ratings, Vance had zero time to take Brenner et al to Funk and Wagnall’s to extrapolate the subtle distinctions between ‘refugee’ and ‘immigrant’. Reason’s otherwise excellent commentaries are too often victims of the congenital Libertarian reflex of sacrificing the Good for the Perfect. My take, “About Those Catholics,” focused on some additional interesting elements of Vance v. USCCB.

Having been interviewed a few times -- not as many as Vance has been -- I know it's challenging to "edit myself" in real time as I'm speaking. If Vance fumbled for words, I empathize. And the interview, while not Rogan-length, was nearly 20 minutes, so he was afforded more time than a soundbite (what video editors do afterward is a horse of different beating). Vance's motivations or slip-ups aside, the resulting conflation is unfortunate.

"Unfortunate", yes. I didn't pick up any word fumbles. One of Vance's attractions is his articulate and logical delivery. However, I would submit the average - or even astute - viewer did not ping Reason's 'conflation' in real time. Forgettable as that show is, only critics or analysts may have noticed. But they have to carp about something; it's in the job description.

Thanks for posting the link. Self-promotion has a penthouse in my Achilles Heel.

The conflation stood out to me, because I (and you and a few others) know that "refugee" can be a legal term for a subset of migrants, who specifically go through a legal process. This is opposed to the type of migration Trump (and by extension, his veep) typically rails about: illegal immigration.

That Vance is known to be very well-spoken made it all the more curious (had Kamala Harris conflated terms, I'd figure she was drunk again and/or doing her "retard LARPing" act). Is the Trump-Vance administration using the terms interchangeably to throw putrid meat to the crowd that despises *all* migration and wouldn't care about the differences?

'putrid meat' -- Could be. Why not? Politics is the Business of Putrid.

Have you ever read tolstoy's religious and political work?

Not Tolstoy's original works, no, but I've heard he's a freedom advocate. Do you have a favorite among Tolstoy's writings, or a good critical analysis of his views, maybe something that could serve as an introduction to his work? Share a link(s), if you have one handy 🔗

You can find My confession and the kingdom of God is within you on YouTube. It's a lot shorter than his novels. He was a Christian anarchist.
